How is NAPLAN scored?

Since 2023, Year 5 NAPLAN no longer uses bands. Instead, results are grouped into four proficiency levels, which show how well students are meeting national expectations in literacy and numeracy.

There’s no pass or fail—the goal is to get a clear picture of your child’s progress.

What do the proficiency levels mean?

Your child’s results will fall into one of these categories:

Proficiency levelWhat it means
ExceedingYour child is doing exceptionally well and is ahead of the expected standard. They’re ready for more advanced learning challenges.
StrongYour child is above the national standard and on track for continued success.
DevelopingYour child is meeting expectations but may need some extra support in certain areas.
Needs additional supportYour child is below the expected standard and would benefit from extra help in literacy or numeracy. Their school may offer additional support programs.

How to read your child’s NAPLAN report

Your child’s report includes:

1. A performance indicator

  • Their result for each test is shown on a scale, so you can see how they’re doing.
  • You’ll also see how their score compares to the national average.

2. Skill level descriptions

  • Each proficiency level comes with a clear explanation of what your child has mastered and what they’re still working on.

3. Next steps for learning

  • If your child is in the Developing or Needs additional support levels, their teacher may suggest extra practice at home or school.
  • If they’re in the Exceeding or Strong categories, they might be ready for extension activities to push their learning further.
