Year 3 NAPLAN is the first time your child must formally undergo a standardised assessment. So, without the right information, it can feel daunting. The important thing to remember is that NAPLAN isn’t designed to measure your child’s intelligence or academic potential. It isn’t a “be-all and end-all” kind of test, and it doesn’t end up on any kind of permanent record. Instead, NAPLAN in Year 3 is designed to test the effectiveness of Australia’s schools and educators. It is designed to inform policy, and to safeguard Australia’s national standards for literacy and numeracy. Moreover, it is there to help educators better understand your child’s academic weak spots, so they can help improve them!

It is there to help you understand how your child is performing in comparison to their peers, so you can get them the help they need early. Ultimately, the most important thing you can do to support your child’s learning is to encourage them. This doesn’t mean conditionally praising them for good grades. Instead, always reward the effort they put in, regardless of their results. Academic achievement comes with practice, persistence and hard work, so this is the behaviour you want to encourage. If you have any other questions about Year 3 NAPLAN, visit the official NAPLAN FAQs page. There, you can access useful information about NAPLAN, as well as handy NAPLAN past papers and solutions sheets!
