NAPLAN results have historically been released during Term 3 of the school year in which they were conducted. The results for the 2023 tests are expected to be released in July, 2023. Every child who participated in NAPLAN in 2023 will receive an Individual Student Result Report directly from their school. These results will outline their performance on the four NAPLAN tests conducted during Term 1 of this year.
You can download a PDF Sample of an Individual Student Result Report here.
School-level NAPLAN results are published on the My School website a year after the tests are conducted. These results outline how individual schools performed comparatively, but does not include individual student reports. Instead, it has a much broader, longitudinal focus, containing data on the NAPLAN performance of every school in Australia over time.
The national NAPLAN report (along with other relevant data/findings) is published on the National Assessment Program website annually. This report showcases the average literacy and numeracy levels of each Australian state according to the NAPLAN test results of that year. It also identifies the relative performance of different sub-groups (male, female, indigenous, regional etc.). This report offers a holistic picture of whether Australia is living up to its national minimum standards, as well as whether specific states or subgroups are falling behind.

Any NAPLAN score that is a Band 3 or above is an indication that your child has exceeded the Australia’s National Minimum Standard for Year 3 literacy.
That said, the bigger picture is a little more complicated! As seen in the above image, Year 3 NAPLAN results are measured on a scale of 6 “Bands”. Your child will be allocated one of these Bands for each of the four NAPLAN tests they completed. Your child’s Band is indicated via the black circle icon (⬤) on their Individual Student Result Report. Conversely, the national average is indicated via the black triangle icon (◄). So what does your child’s Band mean?
Band 1: Band 1 is the lowest performance Band, indicating a skill level below the National Minimum Standard. A Band 1 NAPLAN result indicates that your child has not achieved the basic learning outcomes for Year 3 students. Students in this Band may be unable to progress through school without targeted support.
Band 2: Band 2 is the second lowest performance Band and is considered the National Minimum Standard. A Band 2 NAPLAN result indicates your child has satisfied the basic learning outcomes for Year 3 students. While their performance is satisfactory, students in this Band may require additional support to excel.
Band 3: Band 3 is a substantial NAPLAN score, indicating a skill level just above the National Minimum Standard. A Band 3 NAPLAN result indicates your child has surpassed the basic learning outcomes for Year 3 students. Students in this Band are performing well, though may still benefit from supplemental support.
Any NAPLAN score higher than a Band 2 is a good NAPLAN score for Year 3. If your child scored a Band 2 or lower, all this means is that your child might need a little extra help smashing their literacy goals!
Band 4: Band 4 is a good NAPLAN score, indicating a skill level well above the National Minimum Standard. A Band 4 NAPLAN result indicates your child has exceeded the learning outcomes for Year 3 students and has demonstrated some advanced skills. Students in this Band are performing well, and are encouraged to continue nurturing their academic potential.
Band 5: Band 5 is the second highest performance Band, indicating a skill level greatly exceeding the National Minimum Standard. A Band 5 NAPLAN result indicates your child has advanced far beyond the learning outcomes for Year 3 students and has demonstrated advanced skills. Students in this Band are exceeding expectations.
Band 6: Band 6 is the highest performance Band, indicating an exemplary skill level. A Band 6 NAPLAN result indicates your child has advanced far beyond the learning outcomes for Year 3 students and demonstrated exceptional skills. Students in this Band are greatly exceeding expectations.
*IMPORTANT NOTE: these Band summaries only apply to Year 3 NAPLAN results. Other cohorts utilise different Bands!
